Photographers: What am I doing wrong?
Heres the deal: I have a Nikon D40x camera .. the professional does not know better, but it works. I have the basic 18-55mm lens and 55-200. I just bought a lighting umbrella. I'm trying to create dramatic images with dramatic shadows ect .. for some reason is that there is a delay when you try to shoot … it takes a good 6 seconds for a click of the camera and blurred out all .. this is not what I want. I know I must need a new lens or two .. The D40x is a very good camera, get some great shots out of it! People who are indicating you need to use manual exposre are right on. If you are using anything else – P, Aperture priority, shutter priority, etc, the camera meter is watching the scene without taking into account the flash. Consequently, is a dark scene and gives a long shutter speed so you can get enough light to expose correctly what he thinks is a dark scene. If you decide to invest in a dedicated flash at some point, like an SB600, You Will find that one of the advantages of a dedicated flash is that it communicates with the camera to see how much flash is sufficient. Back to the manual though – when you set the shutter and aperture, which is replacing Camera meters. You are smarter than the camera and know that you will get a flash, so they are compensating for it. It takes some trial and error, but if use the computer a lot will soon know that X set foot umbrella of the person means that you need the camera F 5.6 or whatever. Keep in mind, the speed of shutter has little effect when using strobe lights. Slower shutter speeds tend to illuminate the background a little more but do nothing to the subject. Adjust your aperture if the image is too dark or too light.
