Digital Photo Pixel color formats RGB CMYK and HSV

Digital photos are built of pixels. When you view a digital photo on a computer screen or in a printed version of the photo you are really looking at millions of pixels each with a unique color and intensity. Where has all the characteristics pixels form the photo that you see. There are a few formats used to represent a pixel color are common here.

You've probably heard at least one of the following acronyms: RGB, CMYK and HSV. RGB is the most popular among the CMYK not far behind. Each format is a different way of describing a color of the pixel. The same pixel can be represented in each of the three formats. Each format is commonly used in some applications.

Here is a description of each of these formats and its use:

RGB Red Green Blue: In RGB each pixel is represented as an addition of three primary colors: red, green and blue. Any Color can be reproduced by mixing these three components in varying proportions. RGB is most commonly used to represent the colors displayed on screen computer. The reason is that RGB is an active form or in other words, color is described as an addition of red, green and blue emitted by a light source such as a calculation screen. A calculation screen emits red blue and green light for each pixel to create the color of the pixel.

CMYK Cyan Magenta Yellow Key: The CMYK format is used to represent color pixels printed on paper. The fourth component is key, also known as the proportion of black. Different colors are created by mixing the first three CMY components. Pure black however, is difficult to achieve with the mixture and other reason that the black has a value in itself. CMYK format is also in line with how most color printers that have implemented a black cartridge and three color cartridges Cyan, magenta and yellow. This format is the way to see and describe the colors and therefore use the photo editing software. When we see colors first describe what we see in color (eg green) then add the saturation is (for example, faded green) and then add how bright or illuminated is (for example, bright green color faded).
