Hello From Austria – Classical Music, Hiking
At 9:30 am I went to visit Klaudia, one of my best friends from high school in his parents' house. Our colleague from another school Doris was already there and it was great to see both of them again, more than 23 years after we graduated from high school. After the initial hugs and kisses and how-are-yous we started walking in the local hill, the Weizberg. Our walk took us through the local cemetery, where we admire a famous tomb the final resting place of Aurelia Schwarzenegger, Arnold's mother, who was a longtime resident of Weiz.
Klaudia even mentioned that his father moved to Mrs. Schwarzenegger meeting at the cemetery several years ago, but she had collapsed due to a heart attack. The father of my friend called the ambulance gave emergency treatment and took her to hospital. She died shortly afterwards and Arnold Schwarzenegger sent a letter of thanks to the ambulance staff and Klaudia and the father, to give thanks for getting help for her mother. The proof that in this celebrity real city connections are just steps away …
Right next to the church is called "Kräutergarten (herb garden) that was created by a group of local residents (including mom Klaudia), which has with a wide variety of local herbs, many of which are used in regional cuisine. Then we took the stairs down the hill romantic, a road he had traveled many Sometimes as children. Our local walk, we left our first high school, where we discussed good memories of our school years.
One aspect Highlights of our high school careers of the choir were two trips to Germany, our partner school in Offenburg, where school choirs performed together two songs classic. We remember most fondly the real choir concert where the end of the school both appeared together to sing together the last song. Screaming our lungs out 120 singers from two different countries was an exhilarating experience, and not surprisingly my passions for travel between cultures lit at an early age.
After our return to the parents of Doris Klaudia left and the rest of us began to prepare a good meal, and I, in no way talented in the kitchen, put on his apron and began to cut and cut everything that had to do. (Good thing he was not in charge of the tasks that really matter …) Mom Klaudia whipped up a delicious meal for 10 + people in a very short time and soon sat in the garden have some Austrian specialties: savor a "Bröselknödelsuppe" (Meatballs in bread crumbs in a clear beef broth), green peppers stuffed with delicious mashed potatoes with caramelized onions.
Taking into account this contribution calorie and delicious, substantial, we had to do a workout and decided to hike up to the Schöckel, more than 1400 m the highest local mountain. Around 2 pm met with Doris again and the three of us broke out our Nordic Walking poles and attack the mountain from the most part. Doris, experienced hiker, led the group to a fairly hellish pace, and the two of us climbed up behind her. Some areas were so steep we had to use hands to prepare up among the rocks. But definitely helped our sticks on the rise and an hour later they were rewarded with an incredible view 360 degrees on the hills and mountains of Styria.
The Schöckel also known as the "Grazer Hausberg" or local mountain of Graz, and we had excellent views down into the capital of Styria and the Mur valley. South of the plains of Austria and Slovenia were stretching, looking east and the right of Sierra foothills eastern and western Styria, and north take in the panorama of the towering mountains of the Styrian Alps. We also saw several ramps paragliding activity very popular in this region.
We passed some cows were grazing peacefully in the mountain pastures and reached the summit area is the location of upper cable car station, a few restaurants and a summer toboggan course. The weather today was brilliant and many serious hikers, mountain bikers and tourists flock to the mountain top. We were very fascinated by the summer toboggan and Doris suggested that it should try.
Well, as long I've been a little reckless and I have to say no twice. Even jumped 2.50 euros by around me, and a couple of minutes later I was sitting in the steel buggy of death " ready for my descent down the creeps serpentine curves of the course. In fact, the trip was a great tamer than I expected, and only occasionally threw the brakes, but still a very entertaining experience. I thought if I did it again I would probably try to lower the course without breaking at all.
Once lift my car had pulled back to the summit plateau we started walking beyond the Stubenberghaus, a restaurant and inn big mountain to summit of the cross to the north, which offers a beautiful view of the mountains of Upper Styria. I've always loved the mountains, and see peak after peak was then a great experience. We then started walking towards the car and our trip back was much easier than the climb up winding. We stopped at the home of Doris beautiful country 'on the way back where he admired his newly created garden pond and your new dog. Equipped with some fine ripe peaches Doris Styrian "Farm family who returned to Weiz and I fell Klaudia.
An hour later when we met Klaudia, her husband and two children, their parents, his sister Andrea and her daughters Nina and Katja came home from my brother. Tonight we come together for a great barbecue, and my brother Ewald, the passionate chef, had a few presents special waiting for us. Anneliese, my sister-in-law, had been all afternoon helping with the preparations.
After some initial chit-chat we set a tasty vegetable soup, and then my brother started to prepare the main course: 13 characters Arctic awaiting roasted whole in a large saucepan one open fire. Ewald and fish had been marinated in a special blend of herbs and spices All Day. tender potatoes were to accompany the fish and a salad of solid Styrian pumpkin seeds oil rounded out the entree. A delicious raspberry parfait long as the sweet final note to our culinary symphony.
So despite a bit of time rainy day yesterday, he had a fantastic couple of days that includes classical music, hiking, a meeting with good friends and an incredible variety of gastronomic delights. Now there is only one full day left of my trip to Austria, and tomorrow we will explore one of the medieval treasures of Styria: the Riegersburg, a huge fortress on an outcrop of basalt dating from the 10th century, often referred to as the strongest "fortress of Christianity, since it was never conquered.
