Should I take vocal/singing lessons?
I’m 15 and I have already been taking piano lessons for about 8 years already, but I quit recently because of school and I didn’t really have any time to devote to practicing. I have relative pitch, and I just love singing, particularly r&b and poppy songs. The problem is, I don’t think I have that great of a voice; I recorded my singing once on my phone and when I listened to it, I winced, because I didn’t like the way my voice sounded; the pitches were right though. I’m not sure if I should start taking singing lessons. I want my voice to be more trained but if I ask my parents, most likely they will say it’s a waste of money and I won’t have enough time to practice. But I have a feeling that if I DO start singing lessons, I would be very devoted to it.
You sound like the hard-working super-self-critical type. Singing takes a tone of hard word and dedication and it sounds like you are up for the challenge. I hope between the other answerers and I, we can melt your self-doubts.
Your piano experience will benefit you greatly if you choose to become a vocalist. You already know the ropes of sheet music and…relative pitch down already…will be so helpful.
I’m gonna have to worn you. If you find a good voice teacher you won’t be singing pop and r&b for quite some time. You’ll have to start with the classical stuff and art music–professional training protocall.
What your voice sounds like to you isn’t what it sounds like to everyone else. I can’t stand to listen to recordings of myself–its nasal and annoying–, but I just recorded a CD and people are buying it. Find someone honest that you feel comfortable singing with if you really want to know what everyone else is hearing. Besides the sound quality on your phone probably isn’t very good.
If singing makes you happy go for it. Music is a gift and something that can put a smile on more faces than just yours.
