Gardening in the Shade

If you are lucky enough to have the opportunity to garden in the shade under the canopy of mature shade trees are many advantages not found in the garden in full sun. Shade trees moderate temperatures during the hot summer months and provide gardens with structure, privacy and interest throughout the year. shade gardens are generally easier to maintain gardens in the sun because there is less water and less involved to pull weeds. Shade is essential to comfort people and plants alike. The number of plants that can grow in the shade is enormous, in fact many plants would do well to at least some protection against total exposure to the sun.

The first thing to do when planning a shade garden is to examine the area. Note the space in the period of days to see what kind of shade there. Also note the trees that are creating the shadow and what condition they are in. There are three types of shade, dappled, part shade and shadow. Understand the characteristics of each is important to choose plants for your garden. Although there are many advantages to gardening in at least some shade, deep shade conditions can be difficult. Only once you know the type of shade your dealing should begin selecting plants for your garden.

dappled shade is perhaps the easiest type of shade in which to garden. Occurs beneath deciduous trees where there are drastic changes in the amount of sunlight reaching the ground throughout the year alternating between a patchwork of shade and sun in summer and full sun during the winter after the trees lose their leaves. Many shade tolerant plants such as Trillium, epimedium, anemone and various bulbs have adapted to these conditions of flowering in spring, while still there is some light entering the garden.

partial shade occurs when the sun moves across the sky. It creates situations such as full sun in the morning and shade in the afternoon. Only the most sun plants to love will survive in partial shade. Perfect for those plants which tolerate sun but little shade. shadow PM in this situation is very beneficial to plants, and that will protect from the sun during the hottest hours of the day. If the opposite occurs, the shadow of morning and afternoon sun, some plants tend to look stressed as the coolness of morning shade gives rise to full sun during the hottest hours of the day.

deep shade occurs beneath evergreens or in narrow spaces between tall buildings and can be a challenging environment in which to garden. Soil beneath evergreens is usually poor due to the lack of a fall in annual leaves in deciduous forests provides layers of organic mulch. The Plants selected for deep shade gardens need to be shade loving not only tolerate the shade. When choosing your plants, remember that there is a difference between plants can survive in the shade and those that thrive on it. Summersweet (clethera), for example, thrives in shade and will grow full and lush, while ends rhododendrons up looking scrawny in the deep shade, dappled shade but healthy.

When planting in the shade under the canopy of evergreens, compost for the garden by adding nutrients and increase soil's ability to retain water. Before planting, look up to see if there are branches pruned that could allow dappled sunlight in the garden. Although there are wonderful plants that need shade available, need is determined by selectively pruning trees surrounding to allow at least some sun in space.

Many plants that thrive in the shade, as hosta, have developed large leaves and interesting foliage a form of the plant to capture as much sunlight as possible. In summer, the foliage of shade plants becomes the focal point of the garden. Variegated foliage adds touches brightness and the illusion of light among a sea of green. Use different shades of green throughout the garden as well. Bright yellow greens illuminate a shady space and more deep blue greens create a sense of depth, making more space than it is. Remember, the colors are different in the shade. Color in full sun may seem washed in the shade are vibrant and intense. Try to unify the garden by repeating interesting patterns of color, texture and shape.

While there few annual plants and grasses that do well in shady conditions, There are a number of shrubs, perennials, ferns and bulbs that provide opportunities to plant virtually unlimited. Since spring bulbs and foliage displays complex during the summer to winter evergreens and early flowering shrubs, gardens offer shade gardening pleasures year round and many more opportunities and advantages than any other type of garden.
