What’s a really good English Classic novel to read?
Something somewhat modern and easy to interpret, and preferably around 300 hundred pages? I don’t want a novel that will confuse me/make me get off track.

All of the Jane Austen novels are good, my favorites being “Emma”, “Northanger Abbey”, and “Pride and Prejudice”. They’re straight-forward, amusing, and, despite being a couple hundred years old, don’t feel dated. “Northanger Abbey” is probably the shortest, but really all of them are fast and fun reads.
Heartspace already mentioned a couple of my favorite books: “Tess of the d’Urbervilles” by Thomas Hardy and “Bleak House” by Charles Dickens. Most of Dickens’ novels are closer to 600 (or 900) pages than 300, but he’s an exceptional storyteller and well worth your while. “Great Expectations” is one of his best works, and it’s a more manageable length than most. I also recommend looking into Hardy’s “Far From the Madding Crowd” and “The Mayor of Casterbridge”. He’s a great writer to choose if you have to write a report about the book because there’s always a lot to discuss and analyze.
I don’t know if it’s necessarily easy to interpret (perhaps the opposite, since there are numerous theories about its meaning), but Henry James’ “The Turn of the Screw” is an intriguing novella that also leaves a lot of space for analyzing. Just to warn you, the writing can be a bit dense and humorless compared to Dickens, Austen, and Hardy.
And, then, obviously, there are Brontes’ works, especially “Jane Eyre”, “Wuthering Heights”, and “The Tenant of Wildfell Hall”.
There’s arelso E. M. Forster — “A Room with a View” and “Howards End” are my recommendations. The former is a short, light-hearted romance/comedy, sort of in the Jane Austen line. The latter is more serious and symbolic, but wonderfully well-crafted and a great read. They were published in 1908 and 1910, respectively, so they’re more recent than the others I’ve listed so far.
“Rebecca” by Daphne du Maurier, gothic romance from the ’40s. Definitely interpretable.
Lastly, “Precious Bane” by Mary Webb. It’s a very beautiful, fairy-tale like story, written in the ’20s but set during the Napoleonic wars. It takes place in a rural, backwater part of England and it’s written partially in dialect, which you may find a little distracting at first, but you’ll get used to it as you’re pulled into the story. It’s around 300 pages and flows very well (the atmosphere and themes are a little Hardy-esque, actually — fate, doom, riches, poverty, etc.). “Precious Bane” is often overlooked, but it’s seriously one of the best books I’ve read.
